Two things distinguish this presentation from bacteriostatic water. The first is the salt: at 0.9% sodium chloride the solution is isotonic, meaning its effective osmotic concentration matches that of the reference solution, where bacteriostatic water carries no solute at all. The second is the container — this is the manufacturer's plastic flip-top multi-dose vial rather than a glass one.

What the two share is the preservative. Benzyl alcohol inhibits the growth of most common bacteria, which is what allows a sealed multi-dose vial to be entered more than once instead of being discarded after a single withdrawal. Whether a given product calls for a saline diluent or a water one is specified in that product's own manufacturer information — it is a property of what is being prepared, not a preference.

One label detail is worth stating plainly, because it catches people moving between the two products: here the 0.9% is the sodium chloride concentration, while on a bacteriostatic water label the 0.9% is the benzyl alcohol concentration. The same number describes a different component depending on which vial you are holding. The comparison against ordinary preservative-free saline is the more important one in practice — plain 0.9% Sodium Chloride Injection has the identical salt concentration and looks identical in the vial, but carries no preservative, so its vial is labelled for a single withdrawal.

The preservative's protection is finite rather than open-ended. A printed expiry governs the sealed vial, and a separate, much shorter in-use period begins the moment the stopper is first entered; whichever falls first ends the vial's usable life. Both figures come from the product information supplied with the vial, not from a general reference.
