About Bacteriostatic Water (BAC Water)
Bacteriostatic water — commonly abbreviated to BAC water, and labelled Bacteriostatic Water for Injection USP — is sterile water containing 0.9% (9 mg/mL) benzyl alcohol. The benzyl alcohol is a bacteriostatic preservative: it inhibits the growth of most common bacteria, which is what allows a sealed multi-dose vial to be entered more than once rather than discarded after a single withdrawal.
Two lines are listed here. The original manufacturer presentations are supplied factory-sealed and unaltered — Aus BAC Supply does not decant, repackage or relabel them — and the 30 mL vial is stocked as a single, in multi-vial packs, and in trays of 25 and 50 for larger requirements. Alongside them is our own-label bacteriostatic water in 10, 20 and 30 mL multiple-dose vials, singly and in 2-, 5- and 10-vial packs of each size, carrying no manufacturer's brand.
The two are not labelled for the same purposes and are not interchangeable: the own-label vial's warning panel states that it is not for injection or infusion, not for human or veterinary administration, and not to be ingested. Each vial's own label governs, and it is the label rather than the price that should decide between them.
The manufacturer-labelled presentations are a diluent or solvent, not a ready-to-administer medicine. The manufacturer product information warns that intravenous administration without a solute may cause haemolysis, so such a vial is never injected on its own. Yes. BAC water is the common abbreviation. You may also see it written as bacteriostatic water for injection, BWFI or bac water — all describe sterile water containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol as a bacteriostatic preservative, supplied as a multi-dose diluent.
What size vials can I buy in Australia?

Sterile water carries no preservative, so its vial is labelled for a single withdrawal and should not be re-entered. Bacteriostatic water adds 0.9% benzyl alcohol, which holds bacterial growth in check after the seal is broken and is what makes a multi-dose presentation possible.
How should it be stored?
Store at controlled room temperature in the original vial, away from direct light, and follow the storage and in-use limits printed on the supplied manufacturer product information. Do not use a vial past its printed expiry.
Is bacteriostatic water used for reconstitution?
Reconstitution — dissolving a freeze-dried product in a liquid diluent — is the context in which multi-dose diluent vials are most often searched for, because the benzyl alcohol preservative is what lets a sealed vial be labelled for repeated entry rather than a single withdrawal.
