About Bacteriostatic Water (BAC Water)

Bacteriostatic water — commonly abbreviated to BAC water, and labelled Bacteriostatic Water for Injection USP — is sterile water containing 0.9% (9 mg/mL) benzyl alcohol. The benzyl alcohol is a bacteriostatic preservative: it inhibits the growth of most common bacteria, which is what allows a sealed multi-dose vial to be entered more than once rather than discarded after a single withdrawal.

Every vial we list in this category is an original manufacturer presentation, supplied factory-sealed and unaltered. Aus BAC Supply does not decant, repackage or relabel. The 30 mL Hospira presentation is the one most Australian buyers are looking for, and it is stocked alongside multi-vial packs and trays for larger requirements.

Bacteriostatic water is a diluent or solvent, not a ready-to-administer medicine. The manufacturer product information warns that intravenous administration without a solute may cause haemolysis, so it is never injected on its own. Compatibility, preparation, storage and disposal must follow the supplied product information and qualified healthcare-professional direction. You must be 18 or over to purchase.

Orders are dispatched from Melbourne within 2 business days, with tracked delivery Australia-wide and free express shipping over $150.

Common questions

Is BAC water the same as bacteriostatic water?

Yes. BAC water is the common abbreviation. You may also see it written as bacteriostatic water for injection, BWFI or bac water — all describe sterile water containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol as a bacteriostatic preservative, supplied as a multi-dose diluent.

What size vials can I buy in Australia?

We stock the 30 mL Hospira multi-dose presentation as a single vial, in 2- and 3-vial packs, and in manufacturer trays of 25 and 50 for larger requirements. Every option is the same factory-sealed vial — the pack size is simply how many you receive.

How is bacteriostatic water different from sterile water?

Sterile water carries no preservative, so its vial is labelled for a single withdrawal and should not be re-entered. Bacteriostatic water adds 0.9% benzyl alcohol, which holds bacterial growth in check after the seal is broken and is what makes a multi-dose presentation possible.

How should it be stored?

Store at controlled room temperature in the original vial, away from direct light, and follow the storage and in-use limits printed on the supplied manufacturer product information. Do not use a vial past its printed expiry.
