Understanding bacteriostatic water

A preserved, multi-dose diluent for compatible medicines.

The 30 mL presentation contains sterile water with 0.9% benzyl alcohol as a bacteriostatic preservative. The preservative inhibits the growth of most common bacteria and supports repeated withdrawals from the labelled multi-dose container.

It is supplied as a diluent or solvent for compatible medicines that require preparation before injection. Product choice, preparation and administration must follow the relevant manufacturer information and qualified healthcare-professional direction.

Where a medicine's product information calls for an isotonic diluent instead, we also stock bacteriostatic saline — 0.9% sodium chloride with the same benzyl alcohol preservative, as a 30 mL multi-dose vial.

  • 0.9% benzyl alcohol in the 30 mL presentation
  • Labelled multi-dose container for repeated withdrawal

What is bacteriostatic water?

Bacteriostatic water is sterile water containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol as a bacteriostatic preservative, supplied in a multiple-dose vial. We stock it two ways: our own-label vials in 10, 20 and 30 mL, labelled not for injection or infusion, and the factory-sealed 30 mL manufacturer presentation, labelled as a diluent or solvent for compatible drugs that require preparation before injection. Read the label of the presentation you choose.

Is BAC water the same as bacteriostatic water?

Yes. BAC water is simply the common abbreviation for bacteriostatic water — the two terms refer to the same product. You may also see it written as bacteriostatic water for injection, BWFI, or bac water. All describe sterile water containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol as a bacteriostatic preservative, supplied as a multi-dose diluent.

Is the water injected by itself?

No. It is not a ready-to-administer medicine. The manufacturer product information warns that intravenous administration without a solute may cause haemolysis. Product selection and use must follow the vial label, manufacturer product information and qualified healthcare-professional direction.

How quickly will my order ship?

Orders placed before 1 pm Melbourne time on a business day are dispatched the same business day; orders placed after the cutoff, or on weekends and public holidays, are dispatched the next business day. Delivery estimates are a guide only and are not guaranteed — Express typically arrives within 1–3 business days and Standard within 2–6 business days after dispatch.

What payment methods do you accept?

Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Afterpay and direct bank transfer. All transactions are processed through Stripe with TLS encryption.

Do you offer discounts?

Yes. Joining the Aus BAC Supply members list gets you a one-time $5 code for your first order, delivered by email. Multi-vial packs and bundle kits are also priced below buying the same items separately, with the saving shown on each product page.
