Pick up a sachet of alcohol swabs and it will say 70% isopropyl alcohol. The obvious question is why it isn't 100% — and the answer is that a near-pure alcohol solution is measurably worse at the job, for a reason that is worth understanding. This is a specification guide, not a usage guide.

The question the sachet raises

Isopropyl alcohol (isopropanol, IPA) is an antiseptic. Intuition says more of an active ingredient does more, and for most of what is in a first-aid drawer intuition is right. For alcohol it is not: 70% is the concentration standardised on, and going higher gives up the mechanism that makes it work.

What the water is for

Alcohol kills bacteria by denaturing their proteins — unfolding the structures a cell depends on to function. Protein denaturation by alcohol needs water present. In a solution that is nearly all alcohol, there is not enough water for the reaction to proceed properly, so the process is slower and less complete.

The remaining 30% is not dilution in the sense of watering something down. It is the second reagent.

Why stronger works worse

The more striking effect is what near-pure alcohol does on contact. It denatures and coagulates the proteins of the outer cell layer almost instantly — forming a coagulated shell that impedes further penetration of alcohol into the cell. The outside of the organism is damaged and the inside is protected by the damage.

A 70% solution acts more gradually, which allows it to penetrate the cell rather than sealing itself out of it. Slower, in this instance, is the point.

The counter-intuitive result: 70% isopropyl is the effective concentration, not a cost-saving dilution of a better product. A 99% solution is the right choice for some tasks — drying electronics, removing residues — and the wrong one for antisepsis.

Contact time and evaporation

Denaturation is not instantaneous, so the solution has to stay in place long enough to act. Alcohol evaporates quickly, and the higher the alcohol fraction, the quicker it goes. Water evaporates more slowly, so a 70% solution stays wet on a surface longer than a 99% one — extending the contact time in which anything is happening at all.

This is why a wiped surface is left to dry rather than dried off. The wet interval is the working part; wiping it away ends the process early.

Why every swab is foil-wrapped

The concentration only holds while the sachet is sealed. Foil is used rather than film because alcohol is volatile and will migrate through many plastics over time — an inadequately sealed swab loses alcohol to evaporation and stops being a 70% solution long before it looks dry.

It also explains why swabs are packed individually rather than as a tub of pre-soaked pads. Each sachet is opened at the point of use, and one opened sachet is one swab's worth of exposure rather than the whole supply's. A swab that has dried out is discarded, not re-wetted.

What a swab does not do

An alcohol swab reduces contamination on the surface it is applied to. It does not sterilise that surface, it does not act on anything it does not physically reach, and it does nothing about the condition of what is underneath. On a vial stopper this matters directly: wiping the stopper of a multi-dose vial addresses the surface being pierced, and it has no bearing at all on the vial's in-use period or on whether the solution inside is still clear and free of particulate.

Nor does it change how many times a stopper can be entered — that is governed by the dates, as how many times you can use a multi-dose vial sets out.
