Two things separate this pack from the plain alcohol swabs stocked alongside it, and both are matters of what is in the sachet rather than of what either is for.

The first is the second agent. Both carry the same 70% isopropyl alcohol; this one adds 2% chlorhexidine gluconate. The two behave differently: isopropyl alcohol evaporates and leaves nothing behind, while chlorhexidine is substantive — it binds to the surface it is applied to and remains there after the alcohol has gone. The combination is why the pads are described by their two concentrations rather than by one.

The second is the pad. At 6 cm by 6 cm it covers four times the area of a 3 cm by 6 cm swab folded once, and twice the area unfolded. Each pad is sealed in its own sachet, which is what keeps it wet until it is opened.

They reach us in the manufacturer’s 200-pad carton and are sold here in 20s, in their original individually sealed sachets, unopened and unaltered. The carton is marked for professional and hospital use.

Each pad is single-use: one pad, one surface, then discard. Chlorhexidine causes hypersensitivity reactions in some people, and those reactions can be severe — do not use these if you are sensitive to chlorhexidine, and the plain 70% isopropyl swabs stocked alongside them contain none.
